Sustainability
At BSG Design, sustainability is a core part of what we do. We are always looking for ways to do better—for our clients, our business, our community, and the environment.
Timber’s role in sustainable construction
Choosing sustainable building materials is more important today than ever. At BSG Design we work predominantly with wood, a natural and renewable resource that also provides additional benefits in terms of carbon sequestration.
Natural & Renewable Resource · Timber is a natural product and absorbs CO2 as it grows, meaning that it contributes to a reduction in CO2 in the atmosphere (carbon-negative). The wood we use is sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Durability & Longevity · When properly maintained, timber joinery can last for generations. This is evidenced in older buildings where beams and other structural elements are still in wonderful condition. Its durability means that fewer replacements and repairs are required which in turn leads to less waste and more sustainable construction practices.
Energy Efficiency · Among timber’s many qualities is its natural insulating properties. Timber joinery helps to regulate indoor temperatures, reducing swings in heating or cooling, and lowering energy bills.
Biophilic Design · The biophilic design philosophy aims to incorporate natural elements within built spaces, promoting well-being, sustainability, and a heightened sense of belonging. Timber joinery aligns perfectly with this philosophy providing a connection to the natural world and promoting a sense of wellbeing.

LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
A widely used rating system for green buildings across the globe developed by the non-profit organisation U.S. Green Building Council. Our area comes under LEED ID+C (LEED for Interior Design and Construction) and relates specifically to the development of indoor spaces. It covers:
Commercial Interiors – for interior spaces dedicated to functions other than retail or hospitality.
Retail – for interior spaces used to conduct the retail sale of consumer product goods. Includes both direct customer service areas (showroom) and preparation or storage areas that support customer service.
Hospitality – for interior spaces dedicated to hotels, motels, inns, or other businesses within the service industry that provide transitional or short-term lodging with or without food.
WELL
Certification www.wellcertified.com
The WELL Building Standard™ version 2 (WELL v2™) is a vehicle for buildings and organizations to deliver more thoughtful and intentional spaces that enhance human health and well-being. WELL v2 includes a set of strategies – backed by the latest scientific research – that aim to advance human health through design interventions and operational protocols and policies and foster a culture of health and well-being.
Built upon the pioneering foundation of the first version of the WELL Building Standard (WELL v1), WELL v2 draws expertise from a diverse community of WELL users, practitioners, public health professionals and building scientists around the world.
A number of our recent projects are LEED or WELL certified including:

Supporting a sustainable world
At BSG Design, we recognise our role as a manufacturer of wood products and the responsibility that comes with it. Our operations inevitably impact the environment through waste, raw material consumption, and emissions.
We are fully committed to minimising these effects and protecting the local environment.
We take thoughtful and proactive measures.
Materials
All timber used is sourced from FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified suppliers or sustainable forests.
Compliance
We comply with all relevant environmental laws, regulations, and industry standards.
Best Practice
Workshop machinery is turned off when not in use, and all machinery, tools and other equipment is regularly maintained, reducing potential emissions.
We invest in energy efficient technology and transportation
We constantly evaluate and seek to improve our environmental practices, encouraging input from both clients and employees.
We ensure that our craftspeople are fully trained in sustainability practices.
Waste management
Cutting-edge software on our CNC router and CNC saw ensures that all parts (potentially thousands) are fitted optimally onto the sheets, optimising planning and minimising waste. Any remaining waste is used to heat the workshop. We prioritise working with local suppliers who share our values, helping us reduce our carbon footprint.
We recycle all packaging materials.
We proactively work to reduce dust, waste and noise pollution by refining our processes, equipment, and procedures.
We keep minimal material stock levels, in order to prevent unnecessary waste.
All chemical containers are disposed of responsibly, and legally.
Wood shavings, a natural by-product of our work, are repurposed as fuel to heat our workshop, reducing our use of carbon-based fuels.
